Where to Stay in Phu Quoc: 5 Areas Compared (2026)

The easiest way to make a Phu Quoc trip unnecessarily tiring is to choose the hotel before choosing the area.

The short answer: central Duong Dong / Long Beach for a first trip, the north for a family trip built around VinWonders and Grand World, Ong Lang for a quiet resort break, South Long Beach / Sonasea when airport convenience matters, and the south around Khem Beach when Sunset Town and the big destination resorts are the point of the trip.

Phu Quoc is a long island. The theme parks in the north and the beaches and attractions in the south are not neighboring stops, so a beautiful resort in the wrong place can turn every sightseeing day into a cross-island transfer.

I have lived on Phu Quoc for five years and stayed at more than 20 of its resorts. The north, Ong Lang, central Phu Quoc, South Long Beach and the far south create noticeably different trips—even when the hotels look similar on a booking page.

Understanding Phu Quoc’s Five Hotel Areas

These five zones are a travel-planning model, not a set of administrative boundaries. They reflect the choices travelers actually make when comparing hotels:

North: Bai Dai and Ganh Dau
Ong Lang: the quieter west-coast resort area north of town
Central: Duong Dong and central Long Beach
South Long Beach: the resort strip south of the airport, including Sonasea
South: Khem Beach, Sunset Town and An Thoi

The distinction between central Long Beach and South Long Beach matters. Booking sites often use “Long Beach” loosely, even though a hotel near Duong Dong and a resort near Sonasea create different daily routines.

Map your likely days before comparing room types. Where will you eat? Which attractions are non-negotiable? Will you leave the resort once a day or three times? The answers usually eliminate at least two zones immediately.

1. North Phu Quoc: Theme Parks and Large Resorts

Northern Phu Quoc is the clearest choice for a family trip centered on VinWonders Phu Quoc, Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc and Grand World Phu Quoc. Large full-service resorts dominate the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau area, so it is easy to combine attraction days with pools, kids’ facilities and time inside the hotel.

I have returned to both Sheraton Phu Quoc and Crowne Plaza Phu Quoc in the north. They share a location but not the same atmosphere, which is why I cover their rooms, pools, food and service in separate first-hand reviews.

The main compromise is distance. If you want dinner in Duong Dong every evening or have several days planned in the south, the north adds unnecessary backtracking. The reverse is also true: staying central or south while spending most of the trip at northern attractions creates the same problem.

The north suits you if

Northern theme parks are a major part of your family itinerary.
You prefer a large resort with enough facilities for a full day on the property.
You are happy to group sightseeing by area instead of crossing the island every day.

Look elsewhere first if

Restaurants and the Duong Dong Night Market are part of every evening.
Khem Beach and southern Phu Quoc are the focus of the trip.
You want to step outside your hotel and explore on foot.

2. Ong Lang: Quiet Resort Time and a Natural Setting

Ong Lang is worth considering when the trip is about slowing down rather than working through a long sightseeing list. Instead of one enormous entertainment complex, the area offers a mix of smaller and mid-sized resorts with a greener, less urban feel.

That makes Ong Lang appealing for couples and travelers who want the beach, a pool and an unhurried day. My stay at Grand Ocean Bay captured the area’s strongest quality: it was easy to let the resort and the sea become the day’s plan rather than a base between attractions.

Do not assume every Ong Lang hotel has the same level of convenience. Access to restaurants, shops and the beach varies significantly by property. Check the exact map pin—not just the neighborhood name—if you expect to walk out for dinner or return late without arranging a car.

Ong Lang suits you if

You want a quiet couple’s trip or a resort-first break.
A natural atmosphere matters more than a large entertainment district.
You do not plan to leave the hotel several times every day.

Check before booking

Can you actually walk to the beach, restaurants and shops?
How will you get back after dinner?
Does the resort offer enough dining for the time you plan to spend there?

3. Central Phu Quoc: The Practical First-Trip Base

Central Phu Quoc includes Duong Dong and the northern part of Long Beach. It is the most flexible starting point for a short first visit because it works well for the night market, local restaurants, cafés and an itinerary that is not confined to one end of the island.

There are two different versions of a central stay. Duong Dong puts everyday town life and the night market first. Central Long Beach gives you more of a beach-hotel routine while keeping town within practical reach. A hotel described as “central” is not automatically within walking distance of the night market.

Central Phu Quoc’s strength is flexibility, not superiority. If you want to spend entire days at a vast, self-contained resort, the north, South Long Beach or the south may offer a better match. If you want to eat away from the hotel and see several parts of the island, central is much easier to justify.

Central Phu Quoc suits you if

This is your first Phu Quoc trip and you have a mixed itinerary.
You have three or four days and want the night market, restaurants and sightseeing.
You are traveling solo, with friends or as an active couple.

Distinctions that matter

Duong Dong and central Long Beach do not create the same stay.
“Near the night market” should be checked against the actual walking route.
For beach time, confirm whether the hotel is beachfront or across the main road.

4. South Long Beach / Sonasea: The Middle-Ground Resort Base

South Long Beach is the west-coast resort strip south of Phu Quoc International Airport. You will also see Sonasea used for part of this area.

It feels more like a resort stay than central Duong Dong, but it is less committed to the far south than Khem Beach or An Thoi. That makes it a useful middle ground for travelers who want easier airport access, a west-coast sunset and a full-service hotel while still mixing central and southern plans.

I have stayed in both a suite and a pool villa at Regent Phu Quoc, and I have also stayed at Novotel Phu Quoc. The two belong to very different price and travel categories, so ranking them against each other would not be useful. South Long Beach still requires a property-level map check. Some hotels make it easy to reach nearby food and shops; others function more like self-contained resorts. Do not assume that two hotels sharing the same area label offer the same walkability.

South Long Beach suits you if

You want to simplify airport-day logistics.
You want resort time but still plan to visit central and southern Phu Quoc.
A west-coast sunset matters to your couple’s or family trip.

5. South Phu Quoc: Khem Beach, Sunset Town and An Thoi

Southern Phu Quoc makes sense when Khem Beach, Sunset Town, Sun World Hon Thom or activities departing around An Thoi form a meaningful part of the trip. Staying here keeps southern beaches, destination resorts and the An Thoi cable-car station in the same broad area.

I have returned to JW Marriott Phu Quoc many times and have also stayed at Premier Village Phu Quoc. Both are destination resorts, but they create different stays. Their rooms, pools, dining and service belong in the detailed reviews; the first decision here is whether the south itself deserves to be your base.

The main compromise is the same one the north presents in reverse. Repeated evenings in Duong Dong or a full northern-attraction itinerary turn into long journeys. The south works best when it is the purpose of the trip, not when you are trying to cover the entire island from one extreme.

The south suits you if

Khem Beach and southern attractions are central to the itinerary.
You want a destination resort for a couple’s trip, family holiday or special stay.
You have several southern plans to group together.

Look elsewhere first if

You do not need to decide which half of Phu Quoc is objectively better. Count the activities you actually plan to do in each area and stay near the larger group.

Is a Split Stay Worth It in Phu Quoc?

A split stay can reduce driving when both northern and southern Phu Quoc matter. It also means packing, checking out, moving and checking in again, so it is not automatically more efficient.

Consider two areas when

You have at least five nights and several firm plans in both the north and south.
Experiencing two very different resorts is part of the trip.
One hotel move replaces multiple cross-island return journeys.

Stay in one area when

This is a three- or four-night first trip.
You are traveling with young children or a lot of luggage.
Restaurants and day trips from a central base matter more than two resort experiences.

A north-and-south combination is easy to understand because the two stays serve clearly different parts of the itinerary. Moving simply because two famous hotels look attractive is harder to justify unless the move saves real travel time.

First visit, three or four days: Central Phu Quoc for food, the night market and a flexible itinerary.
Family trip to northern theme parks: The north, keeping attractions and resort time in one zone.
Quiet couple’s break: Ong Lang, after checking the exact hotel’s dining and transport situation.
Airport convenience and a full-service resort: South Long Beach as the middle-ground option.
Khem Beach and southern sightseeing: The south, without trying to add the north to every day.
Five nights or more with firm plans at both ends: A north-and-south split, but only if it genuinely replaces repeated transfers.

Before booking, zoom in on the hotel’s map pin and identify the beach, main road, restaurants and likely pickup points. Two properties in the same zone can still create very different daily routines.
