The Main Leg: Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by Train via Huanglongjiuzhai
Huanglongjiuzhai Station opened on August 30, 2024, and it changed everything about getting here. Before that, you’d get off at Chuanzhusi Station and still have a 3-hour bus ride ahead of you. Now the train drops you close enough that a shuttle handles the rest.
- Route: Chengdu East Station (成都东站) → Huanglongjiuzhai Station (黄龙九寨站)
- Duration: 1 hr 39 min to 2 hr 30 min, depending on the train — the fastest option clocks in at 1 hr 39 min
- Price: ¥115–141 / roughly $16–20 USD depending on the train (as of 2026)
- Frequency: about 6–20+ trains a day — closer to 20 during peak season and holidays, as few as 6 in the off-season
- First/last train: first departure around 6:01am, last one somewhere between 7:10pm and 9pm depending on the day

- ⚠️ Heads up: 12306 requires a Chinese phone number to sign up and book, which makes it a non-starter for most foreign travelers. That’s why this guide sticks to Trip.com.
- Trip.com charges a small booking fee, but you don’t need a Chinese number, and it has English support — far less stressful if your Chinese is limited
- Tickets open 15 days before departure, at 6am Beijing time — mark your calendar, because this route sells out fast
- If tickets are gone, Trip.com’s app has a waitlist/standby feature that actually works — I’ve gotten a seat this way. If you’re traveling as a group, put each person on the waitlist separately rather than booking together; it seems to improve your odds.
From Huanglongjiuzhai Station to Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong (Shuttle)
Getting off the train isn’t the finish line — Huanglongjiuzhai Station is still some distance from both parks, so you’ll need a shuttle for the final stretch.

💡 Real tip: After booking, your driver’s info and license plate get sent by text — but that text won’t reach you without a Chinese phone number. Contact Trip.com’s customer service ahead of time and get the driver’s details manually. I missed this step once and ended up wandering around the station for a while trying to figure out where to go. Sort it out in advance and you’ll save yourself the hassle.

Fitting Jiuzhaigou + Huanglong Into 1.5 Days: The Route
I’ll cover how many days you actually need in the itinerary guide — this section is just about how the legs connect if you’re doing both parks back to back.
If you’re squeezing Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong into a night-and-a-half, the trick is lining up your train and shuttle times. I’d suggest Huanglong on day one (half a day), Jiuzhaigou on day two (the full day) — Huanglong only takes about 4 hours to see properly, while Jiuzhaigou needs at least 6.
