Chengdu, Huanglong & Jiuzhaigou: A Realistic 4-Day Itinerary
This is the realistic 4 day Chengdu Jiuzhaigou itinerary most people are actually asking about: “Can you actually see Chengdu, Huanglong, and Jiuzhaigou in four days?” In the itinerary guide, I broke down how many days you need case by case — and the one people keep asking about is the “Jiuzhaigou + Huanglong + Chengdu, 2 nights 3 days or more” case. This post is that case, spelled out as one concrete 4-day route.
The short version: the order is Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou → Chengdu. Huanglong gets folded into the travel leg instead of eating up its own day, which means Jiuzhaigou gets a completely open day to itself. Below is the day-by-day — booking details for each leg are already covered in their own guides, so this one’s just about the order, and why it works.
The 4-Day Chengdu Jiuzhaigou Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Base | Main plan | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Chengdu | City sightseeing (Kuanzhai Alley, or Jinli + Wuhou Shrine) | Chengdu Layover Guide |
| Day 2 | Near Jiuzhaigou | Early train → Huanglong (half-day) → hotel near Jiuzhaigou | Transport Guide, Huanglong Guide |
| Day 3 | Chengdu | Jiuzhaigou (full day) → evening train back to Chengdu | Ticket Guide, Routes Guide |
| Day 4 | — | Panda Base and any last stops before departure | Chengdu Layover Guide |

Day 1 — Land in Chengdu
Keep the first day light. You’ve probably just gotten off a long flight, so one low-effort half-day option — Kuanzhai Alley, or Jinli plus Wuhou Shrine — is plenty. In the evening, pair it with something distinctly Chengdu: hot pot, or a face-changing show.
What to actually do in Chengdu and how to string it together is covered in the Chengdu layover guide, so I won’t repeat it here. The one thing to remember: Day 1 is a placeholder day — the only real mission is not missing your early train the next morning.

Day 2 — Early Train → Huanglong → On to Jiuzhaigou
This is the backbone of the whole trip. You’ll catch an early train from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai Station, take the shuttle into Huanglong for half a day, then continue by shuttle to your hotel near Jiuzhaigou.
- For train times, fares, and booking, follow the numbers in the transport guide — I’m deliberately not repeating specific times here, since schedules shift by season and putting an old timestamp in this post would do more harm than good.
- At Huanglong, taking the cable car up and walking down keeps the physical toll low. For what’s actually there and how long to spend, see the Huanglong guide.
- Before you book your shuttle, confirm it covers the full route — “station to Huanglong” and “Huanglong to your Jiuzhaigou hotel” — not just the first leg (booking details in the transport guide).
💡 This is the day altitude is most likely to catch up with you. Don’t push it — take it slow. For a full prep checklist, see the travel tips guide.

Day 3 — Jiuzhaigou, Then Back to Chengdu
Getting in right at opening is the key to seeing everything in one day. Ticket and time-slot booking is in the ticket guide, and how to work the left/right/center routes efficiently is in the routes guide — won’t repeat either here.
If you’re heading back to Chengdu the same day, the rhythm is: wrap up sightseeing by around 3:00–3:30 PM, shuttle back to the station, then catch an evening train. Since how long Jiuzhaigou actually takes can stretch depending on weather and how you’re feeling, book a train with a comfortable buffer — check the transport guide for timing. If things are cutting it close, staying one more night near Jiuzhaigou and taking a morning train the next day beats rushing the same-day return.

Day 4 — Panda Base and Wrapping Up
Pandas are most active in the morning, so get to the Panda Base early. After that, build the rest of the day around your flight — if you’ve got extra time, tea at People’s Park or a stroll through Kuanzhai Alley is a nice, low-key way to close things out.
If your flight’s early, skip the Panda Base entirely and just leave Day 4 as a departure buffer. The only truly “non-negotiable” part of this route is Days 2–3 (Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou) — the Chengdu-side days (1 and 4) are a flexible layer you can shrink or stretch depending on your situation. For the details, see the Chengdu layover guide.

Why 4 Days Works — and When You Need a 5th
This route works because Huanglong gets folded into a travel leg instead of taking its own day. Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou is a travel day either way — adding half a day at Huanglong in the middle doesn’t cost you anything extra, so you effectively spend “one day traveling, one day sightseeing” instead of two separate days.
That said, add a 5th day if:
- You want to enjoy Chengdu at a more relaxed pace, a full day on each end
- You’re prone to altitude sickness, or you’re traveling with parents (see the travel tips guide)
- You want to spend extra time photographing Jiuzhaigou and split it across two days (see “Case 3” in the itinerary guide)
FAQ
How is this different from the itinerary guide?
That guide compares how many days you need, case by case. This one takes a single case — “Chengdu + Huanglong + Jiuzhaigou in 4 days” — and lays out exactly how the days connect.
Is 4 days really enough?
If you’re only doing Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou, yes. If you want to enjoy Chengdu at a relaxed pace, or you’re worried about altitude, add a 5th day.
Can I flip the order and do Jiuzhaigou first?
Yes. If you’re worried about altitude, or traveling with older family members, doing the lower-elevation Jiuzhaigou first is worth considering.
Do I have to split Chengdu across two days (Day 1 and Day 4)?
No. If your flight is tight, drop the Day 4 plans entirely and just use it as a departure buffer.
