Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 24, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what information Off The Map Asia (“this site,” “we,” “us”) collects from visitors, how that information is used, and the choices available to you. Our website address is: https://offthemapasia.com.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form, plus the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be shared with the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.

Media

If you upload images to this site, avoid uploading images that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the site can view and extract location data from images.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in a cookie. This is for your convenience so you do not have to re-enter your details when you leave another comment. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie holds no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we also set cookies to save your login details and screen preferences. Login cookies last two days, and screen-option cookies last a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login persists for two weeks. Logging out removes these cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. It contains no personal data beyond the post ID of the article you edited, and expires after one day.

Embedded Content

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example, videos, images or booking widgets). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that website directly.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content — including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Google Services, Advertising and Cookies

This site uses Google services, including Google Analytics, and — where enabled — Google AdSense, to understand how visitors use the site and to display advertising.

These services, and the third-party vendors that work with them (including Google), use cookies, web beacons, device identifiers and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other websites, and to measure how our content and ads perform. This may involve the use of your IP address and other identifiers, consistent with Google’s Privacy Policy and Google’s page on how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

Third-party vendors, including Google, may show ads on this site based on your visits to this and other websites, and may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits. You can learn more and manage your ad settings at:

We also use Google Site Kit to connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics, which help us understand aggregate, largely anonymized traffic patterns — for example, which guides are most read and which countries visitors come from.

Affiliate Links

This site contains affiliate links, including links to Trip.com, Klook and Marriott’s affiliate program. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate networks may set their own cookies to track referrals. See our Affiliate Disclosures page for details.

Who We Share Your Data With

If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service. Aggregated or anonymized analytics and advertising data is shared with Google as described above, and referral data is shared with affiliate networks when you click an affiliate link.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For any users who register on this site, we also store the personal information in their user profile. Users can see, edit or delete their personal information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also see and edit that information.

Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics’ standard retention settings.

Your Rights Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, and you can request that we erase personal data we hold about you — except data we are required to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have rights under the GDPR to access, correct, delete or restrict the use of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us as described below.

Children’s Privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date above.
